Seulgie Lim’s chapter, The Absence of Secularism in Senegal, explains the strong connection between politics and Islam contrasted with the adaptability of religious norms for modern gender policies in Senegal. Lim argues that the values of versatility and tolerance in Senegal allow for modern politics to find their place within society. Lim specifically uses existing research on Sufi Islam in Senegal and the Law on Absolute Party to further her analysis. Lim concludes that secularism is meaningless and impractical in Senegal, and Senegalese politics centers around interpretation, adjustment, and inclusion, around which Senegalese democracy is constructed.
