Abstract
This chapter uses an interactive map of holy springs in the Orel region of Central Russia to consider how local history and place-based identity is being reconstrued in the post-Soviet era. Launched in 2011 and continuing to attract content, the map and accompanying website include directions and photographs along with narratives and testimonies by local residents and journalists. The chapter situates both the springs and the website in religious, cultural and historical contexts, making brief comparison of site narratives and discourses with depictions of Orel holy springs in the work of contemporary writers.
