Abstract

Double consciousness is the idea of being aware of both social and personal identity and how displaying one personality over another can affect how you are treated. I am using myself and my own experiences as a lens to explain the discrimination Japanese people and foreigners in Japan were treated after Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed in 1945. While researching for this paper, I realized that hibakusha, people affected by nuclear radiation from the bomb, are added on as a new identity, and I discovered how this new identity, for different groups of identities, changes the way they are perceived by their neighbors and perpetrators.
