Bates Historical Review

Aims & Scope

The mission of the Bates College Historical Review (hereafter “BHR” or “the Review”) is to provide a forum for undergraduate students to publish their original scholarship. It is meant to be a space for mature, rigorous, and meaningful discussion of history and how it shapes the present. The Review is an institution of Bates College’s academic life, and seeks to increase students’ engagement with the study of history at Bates. It is also intended to reflect the mission and goals of its sponsoring organization, the Bates Historical Society (hereafter “BHS” or “the Sponsoring Organization”), as well as that of Bates College.

The scope of the Review is “history” — a field including, but not limited to, political history, economic history, art history, and intellectual history. In general, published articles should study "the chronological record of events…attempting, on the basis of a critical examination of source materials, to explain events," per the Encyclopedia Britannica definition of history. The subject matter of articles must have taken place at least 20 years prior to the publication year of the upcoming volume. Analysis of present-day events within a historical context is permissible, but should not be the main focus of the piece. The editorial board makes the final decision as to whether a submitted manuscript falls within the scope of the Review.
