Abstract
Located in the San Juan Islands, off the coast of Washington, island residents are frustrated by the change in their skies. The neighboring island Whidbey has a naval airbase, which in 2008 switched jet models to the Boeing EA-18G Growlers. Their practice-flights over the San Juans are reported to shake windows and measured only two decibels less than thunder within residents’ homes. Scientific literature on the effects of airport noise pollution and human and bird community health is drawn into the conversation to see if the Navy should keep expanding their Growler jet fleet.
