Abstract
This thesis seeks to explore the history and uses of pastoral images, as well as the history of agriculture in America. It will also examine pastoral images in food marketing and the strategies proposed by scholars for constructing the new pastoral. Consumers today do not eat because it feels right or tastes good. They eat because they are told to eat and they are perpetuating a system of violence and oppression that starts with the animal but ends with the consumer themselves. Only through fully understanding the agricultural world of today, the power of pastoral images, and the importance of rediscovering an authentic relationship with nature can the contemporary consumer regain control of their food and their happiness.
