Abstract
“Big business”, such as multinational corporations and consumer companies, matter in 21st century sustainability initiatives. Business and sustainability can form a symbiotic relationship as there are many specific benefits that they can bring to each other. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a business model that is central to sustainability as it helps companies to be socially accountable to themselves, their stakeholders, and the general public. Ultimately, all business depends on the planet. The global loss of nature will not only make the planet less stable, but will cost the global economy trillions of dollars every year. This thesis focuses on why corporations are focusing on sustainability, the different models they choose to work with, and the specific benefits of businesses becoming involved in the fight against climate change.
