A. van Allen, Jr., was a bank clerk in Boston, and likely a friend or associate of George Harris. The twenty-nine scores in this volume date between 1847 and 1876, with the bulk dating from 1857 to 1867. As with many of the scores in the Harris Collection, these items are a mix of popular and sacred songs and music. Several items are inscribed with van Allen's name on the cover.
