Binder's Volume: Emma Cheney piano music

Emma R. Cheney was born in Lebanon, Maine, in 1850. She was the daughter of Oren B. Cheney, founder and first President of Bates College, and Nancy Perkins Cheney. She was also a cousin of the well-known composer Amy Cheney Beach. Emma married Lewiston banker Frank Boothby in the 1870s, and in 1890 they built and moved into the house that is currently the President's House at the College. Her three sons Cheney, Willard, and Richard all graduated from Bates. Emma died in Lewiston in 1921.

The thirty-eight scores contained in this binder's volume were published between 1843 and 1877, with the bulk falling between 1858 and 1866. The scores are a mix of popular songs, dances, and arrangements from classical pieces. Included are a number of patriotic pieces from the American Civil War and the Mexican-American War.

NOTE: The file titled "Cheney Cover" shows the cover of the bound volume as well as a partial hand-written table of contents. More information about the volume and the scores therein can be found in the Bates College library catalog record.
