Bates College Journal of Philosophy and Social Issues

Aims & Scope

The mission of the Bates College Journal of Philosophy and Social Issues (hereafter “JPSI” or “the Journal”) is to provide a forum for undergraduate students to publish their original scholarship. It is meant to be a forum for mature, rigorous, and meaningful discussion of philosophy and social issues. The Journal is an institution of Bates College’s academic life, and seeks to increase students’ engagement with the study of philosophy at Bates. It is also intended to reflect the mission and goals of its sponsoring organization, the Bates Philosophy Forum (hereafter “BPF” or “the Sponsoring Organization”).

The scope of the Journal is philosophy and social justice — areas including, but not limited to, ethics, epistemology, aesthetics, logic, metaphysics, and topics related to the establishment of a fair and just society. In general, published articles should study "the rational, abstract, and methodical consideration of reality as a whole or of fundamental dimensions of human existence and experience," per the Encyclopedia Britannica definition of philosophy. The editorial board makes the final decision as to whether a submitted manuscript falls within the scope of the Journal.
