Alfred Williams Anthony (1860-1939) taught at the Cobb Divinity School of Bates College, and the College itself, for 23 years, resigning in 1911. He was also a noted theologian, author, and minister, and served in a number of positions for organizations that worked on ecumenical issues. He was also the author of the first history of the college, Bates College and Its Background, published in 1936.
